AGA Reports a Record-Breaking 2022 for Gaming Industry

by Global Payments Gaming Team / February 2, 2023

With 2022 in the books and 2023 already in full swing, it’s time to examine some of the gaming industry’s biggest successes from last year. Alongside the legalization of sports betting across many states as well as new advents in online gaming, the industry overall has seen a tremendous amount of growth in the past 12 months. According to the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker, comparative growth increased by 2.4% year-over-year for the 21st consecutive month. Additionally, the commercial gaming revenue through November 2022 ($54.93 billion) is already 13.5% higher than it was in 2021 and beat the previous year’s record ($53.04 billion).

Now that the industry has licked its wounds from the pandemic, commercial gaming is now stronger than ever before. While online gaming is continuing to surge, many people are able to go back in person to casinos and gambling facilities, an indicator as to why the revenue is higher than average.

“We’re seeing the world gradually open back up again and people are hungry as ever to game,” said AGA Senior Vice President Casey Clark. “As legal commercial sports betting slowly sweeps the nation, it’s offering a lot of new and untapped opportunities for consumers.”

The busy sports calendar toward the latter half of the year and the legalization of sports betting are two factors that go hand in hand with how commercial gaming revenue was so high in 2022. The sheer multitude of games to bet on has opened the door for many avenues of revenue. With Global Payments iGaming solutions, patrons enjoyed a simplified and easy gaming experience.
